Sonar products

Ultra is Prime Contractor for the UK's Type 45 Sonar 2091 medium frequency bow sonar meeting the requirement for submarine detection and in-volume mine avoidance.

The Ultra Multi-Static Active System (MSA) comprises a field of transmit and receive sonobuoys and the necessary processing to detect and track targets without overloading the operator. The system uses combinations of the following buoy types, all of which are
available from Ultra with embedded GPS for precision operation:

- SSQ 926 ALFEA Electro-Acoustic Source
- SSQ 955 HIDAR High Dynamic Range DIFAR
- SSQ 981E Barra (Horizontal Planar Array)

In another specialised sonar field, using high resolution Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS), Ultra provides high speed coverage for mine detection and oceanographic survey. Featuring co-located high resolution swath bathymetry and sidescan imagery. The system can be hull mounted, towed or packaged for autonomous and remotely operated vehicles.

The Ultra Forward Look Sonar complements the SAS system by dramatically increasing coverage rates. It has further stand-alone applications in obstacle avoidance and mine detection.

Mine disposal system SEAFOX

SEAFOX is an expendable remotely-operated underwater vehicle which uses a shaped charge warhead to neutralise the target mine. Operated from a shipboard console, with communications from the console to the vehicle sensors via a fibre-optic cable, SEAFOX uses its own onboard guidance and navigation system to acquire and prosecute the target.

Teamed with Atlas Elektronik and Babock Engineering Services, Ultra was selected as prime contractor for the delivery of SEAFOX to the Royal Navy as their one-shot mine disposal system.

Submarine communications at speed and depth

Ultra’s pedigree in submarine communications is evidenced by its ability to offer potential solutions to all the technology requirements of the Communications at Depth programme. This includes various tethered (RTOF) and expendable communication buoys (ETOF), and a new submarine paging system which again demonstrates Ultra's ability to leverage core skills in acoustics technology.

Gunshot detection systems

Ultra's Rifle Mounted Gunfire Locator (RMGL) is a specialist surveillance product at the forefront of gunfire detection and localisation for the land battlespace. Transforming detection technology, the sensor is lightweight, portable and durable, designed to provide enhanced situational awareness for users in hostile environments.
